The combination of the Agilent 1290 Infinity II HPLC with the Sciex Triple Quadrupole QTRAP 6500+ mass spectrometer forms a high-performance system for the sensitive analysis of environmental contaminants in complex matrices (e.g., water, sediment, animal matrices, plants). The HPLC ensures excellent chromatographic separation thanks to its high pressure stability of up to 1300 bar. The Sciex 6500+ mass spectrometer utilizes IonDrive™ technology, electrospray ionization (ESI), or atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) to achieve detection limits in the low pg range, which is particularly important for trace-level environmental analysis. The Analyst software is used for instrument control, method development, data acquisition, and processing. Identification and quantification of analytes in the samples are performed using the Sciex OS software.
The analytical system is used to determine and identify active substances and their metabolites. In this context, multi-method approaches are playing an increasingly crucial role, meaning that not only individual substances but also mixtures of substances in environmental or laboratory samples are analyzed to obtain insights into the fate and behavior of environmental contaminants (e.g., pesticides, rodenticides, emerging contaminants) in the agricultural ecosystem. Furthermore, these analytical results can also help address questions in the fields of ecotoxicology, resistance and climate research.
