Device name: Rollgewächshäuser / Rain-out Shelter

Description: The JKI-PB Institute has two 24 m long and 12 m wide rain-out shelters at its Bundesallee location. Rain-out shelters are rolling greenhouses which move over the experimental area under the control of sensors when it rains and then return to their home position. Each of the two rain-out shelters has a suspended watering trolley with the help of which any amount of water can be poured out. Through the possibility of rain exclusion and additional irrigation the timing and amount of water available to agricultural crops can be precisely controlled. By simulating different precipitation patterns, the consequences of changed rainfall conditions for agricultural production can be determined and adaptation measures derived.

Device name: Schlepper 313 Vario S4

Description: Agricultural used tractor to tillage, sowing, application of fertilizer and plant protection products.

Device name: FACE-Facility (Free Air Carbon Dioxide Enrichment)

Description: The FACE (free air carbon dioxide enrichment) facility at JKI site Braunschweig-Bundesallee consists of a total of four rings (or octagons) with diameters of 17.5 meters. Inside the rings, the carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration is increased by injecting CO2 through tubes running on the outside. Depending on the wind direction and speed, CO2 is injected from a different direction. A CO2 analyzer is located in the center of each ring, and the amount of CO2 required is regulated by a control unit depending on the target concentration, wind direction and wind speed. Each ring is controlled separately, so the four rings can be used independently of each other. Further infrastructure includes a gas tank (capacity 24.5 t), two passive evaporators and an underground pipeline from the tank to the FACE facility. The FACE facility is located on an experimental field characterized by sandy soil with low water holding capacity and no groundwater connection. The location is therefore ideal for stress experiments, with the possibility for irrigation.

Elemental analysis

Device name:ICP-OES icap 6300 DUO

Description: Optical emission spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma (ICP) for the determination of macro and micro elements in soil, plant and fertilizer samples.. Methods: determination of elements in different types of wet extracts and digestates.

Device name:Röntgenfluoreszenzspektrometer S8 Tiger

Description: X-ray fluorescence spectrometer for the determination of macro and micro elements in soil, plant and fertiliser samples. Method: non-destructive x-ray fluorescence analysis of ground samples prepared as flat discs pressed into a wax matrix.

Device name:NexION 5000 Multi-Quadrupole ICP Mass Spectrometer

Description: The NexION is a high-resolution multi-quadrupole mass spectrometer with inductively coupled plasma for the determination of inorganic trace elements. Mainly heavy metals (Cr, Ni, Zn etc.) or rare earth metals (Ce, Pr, Nd etc.) are detected in water samples or acid digestions of plant and soil samples. In addition, non-metals (S, P, Se), semimetals (B, Si etc.) or alkali and alkaline earth metals (Li, Be etc.) contained in low concentrations can be determined.
