Overall objective of the project

The aim of the project is the generation of data (dermal and inhalative) for exposure assessment of bystanders and residents caused by drift during application of plant protection products in orchards. Due to lacking and outdated data, the EFSA-guideline recommends explicit the generation of actually relevant measurement data related to spray exposure in orchards. The association of the manufacturers of plant protection products in Europe (ECPA) has followed this advice and started a project in 2015 for measuring the spray exposure at distances of between 5 and 15 m compared with 8 m and 50 m from existing studies by the application of plant protection products in vineyards and fruit orchards. Supplementary data generation by German authorities are required for closing existing gaps (distances < 5 m), making a flexible risk assessment and using derived options for a better risk management. Scientific requests and challenges: - Generation of exposure data by using modern and drift reducing techniques - Taking lower distances into account - Generation of exposure data in orchards with state-of-the-art culture processing - Increase the forecasting power and robustness of the predictive models for exposure assessment - Preservation and increase of the expertise with regard to generation of exposure data by the regulatory authorities - Classification of the generated data for a general derivation of minimum distances by using plant protection products This project is part of the sovereign tasks within the competent authorities with clear demarcation to industrial studies.
