Members of the genus Monilinia spec. cause fruit rot and peak drought in fruit growing, especially in stone fruit. Extensive chemical plant protection measures are carried out to protect both the plants and the harvest from infestation. Up to now, the interaction of the fungus with the host plant has hardly been investigated and the causes of the variety-specific resistances have not yet been identified. The biology of the pathogen as well as the interaction with the host plant will be investigated with the aim to optimize control and understanding the genetic causes of resistance in order to use this information for the breeding of Monilinia-resistant varieties.
