Overall objective of the project

The MOSAIC database contains chemical and biological data collected by the Julius Kühn Institute as part of the monitoring activities for the implementation of the National Action Plan for the Sustainable Use of Plant Protection Products. These data include information on the composition of the benthic macroinvertebrate community and pesticide pollution of small standing and running waters (<1 ha area, <30 km² catchment area) in Germany, which are among the hot spots of biodiversity. The water bodies included in the database are mainly located at or in agriculturally used areas, allowing conclusions to be drawn about their biodiversity and the potential risks posed by different forms of agricultural management. Furthermore, the database contains information on physicochemical water parameters, nutrient loads of the water bodies, habitat descriptions as well as agricultural field and crop information of the surrounding agricultural land. The database is based on the open source database management system PostgreSQL, which is widely used in life sciences. It is a central component of the quality assured research data management, thus ensuring an efficient and sustainable re-use of the data.
