Overall objective of the project

Cities and other urban areas offer various habitats for animal and plant species, with cultivated plants representing a key feature in these settings. Apiculture within cities is becoming inreasingly important. One major objective in modern urban planning is the creation and maintenance of flora and fauna for improving urban ecosystems and the quality of life for humans. The presence of honeybees, bumblebees and other wild bees can enhance the quality of life for humans. Due to an exchange between bee populations in urban and agricultural landscapes, research in urban and agricultural ecology is interconnected. Moreover, the urban infrastructure creates research opportunities for particular questions with regard to the protection and promotion of bees, the results of which can be related to the agricultural context.
