Apple replant disease (ARD) is characterized by the fact that after repeated replanting, the subsequent plants are impaired in growth as well as in fruit quantity and quality. This affects the replanting of apple plants in nurseries as well as apple production. The causes were unknown for a long time because the expression of the disease is presumably based on the complex interaction of several biotic and abiotic factors. Due to the complexity, a large consortium "ORDIAmur" led by Traud Winkelmann (LU Hannover) has come together to concertedly investigate all possible causes (since 2015). Among other things, fungal species associated with the expression of ARD could be identified, but also fungal species that can be used as possible antagonists. The knowledge gained in Phase I and II will be used to establish a molecular detection assay that will allow high-throughput sample processing. In addition, the putative antagonistic endophytes will be tested in field trials for ARD control. This will take place as part of the currently planned 3rd project phase of ORDIAmur (start 2022).
