In all crops, constantly changing conditions may result in new or atypical disease patterns, the diagnosis of which is not or hardly possible with the equipment and routine procedures of the responsible plant protection services. In the case of unusual disease patterns in fruit crops whose pathogens are presumed to be fungi, diagnosis is carried out in close cooperation with the plant protection services. The cooperation is based on regular exchange (e.g. participation in the Working Group Diagnosis of the Plant Protection Services and other national meetings) and direct contact in case of need. In the course of the investigations, diagnostic procedures are improved by establishing more robust or less costly methods compared to the usual detection methods. For example, species-specific PCR assays are developed based on available genome sequences that do not require sequencing for evaluation.
