From 2036 (if there is no extension of the deadline) all plant propagating material (seeds, cuttings, young plants, etc.) in organic production must be organic. This specification represents a challenge that cannot be solved at present for the ornamental plant sector and must therefore be intensively supported with research. The overarching goal of the project is therefore the analysis, establishment and support of the availability of Bio-PVM for ornamental plants in the areas of perennials, beds & balconies, cut flowers and tree nurseries. Since the requirements for each ornamental plant area are very different, the target is adapted to the respective production area according to the current circumstances in terms of demand, status of networking, availability of young plant material. In young plant companies, queries and interviews are used to analyze which crops and cultivars are particularly suitable for organic cultivation with regard to the EU organic regulation and their ecological sustainability (transport, cultivation methods, plant health) (assortment check). In addition to the existing assortments, other types of plants and cultivars tested for their potential for organic certification. On the one hand, these can serve as a substitute for the young plant species that are in demand, which have no potential to receive organic certification, or to expand the assortment of organic young plants on offer. In this context, it is being evaluated whether it is necessary to breed special assortments for organic ornamental plant cultivation.
