The Sentinel Pond Network is the establishment of permanent monitoring sites in small water bodies in the agricultural landscape in various regions of Germany. The aim of the project is the long-term and continuous recording of the chemical and ecological condition of small water bodies in the agricultural landscape using representative study objects (so-called sentinel ponds). The Sentinel Pond Network aims to investigate the extent to which the diversity, biomass and function of aquatic organisms (e.g. insects) are influenced by the cultivation measures and practices practised on the adjacent agricultural land. An essential element of the project is the regular monitoring of biodiversity over a period of several years to decades. The programme aims to a) record the current status of small water bodies in the agricultural landscape and b) monitor any changes in this status.
