Overall objective of the project

For the future cultivation of sweet cherries in Germany, new rootstocks are needed which will meet the future requirements of cherry growing and the climatic changes. In a previous project ZO-0042, five promising rootstock clones were selected. These rootstock clones will be evaluated in a federal rootstock trial at seven test sites in Germany (JKI Dresden, TLLLR Erfurt, OVA Jork, DLR Oppenheim, LWG Veitshöchheim, LVWO Weinsberg, LTZ Augustenberg) in 2023. The evaluation of the new rootstocks will stretch over a period of about eight years. The focus of the evaluation is directed on the following value characteristics: growth reduction, early onset of yield, good tree structure and fruit set, good compatibility with sweet cherry varieties, resistance to abiotic and biotic pests, specific ecological suitability for cultivation. These investigations are of particular importance due to the changing cultivation requirements for sweet cherry.
