The overall goal of the subproject is to characterize the climate protection functions of the subsoil in agroforestry systems and to bring subsoils into the focus of research and political discussion.Therefore, climate-regulating microorganisms (nitrifiers, denitrifiers, methanotrophic and methanogenic microorganisms) and carbon stocks in the topsoil and subsoil of alley cropping systems will be quantified. Furthermore, the contribution of root-associated soil fungi in the subsoil to the "safety net" and "nutrient pump" function of trees with respect to leached nutrients will be determined. The results generated in the project will be shared at workshops and field days with stakeholders from agriculture, lower authorities, ministries, and land use associations to further promote the acceptance and promotion of agroforestry systems.
