The project makes an indispensable contribution to sustainable potato cultivation in Hesse, which is threatened by the new potato disease "Bacterial potato tuber wilt" and its vector insects, according to the current state of affairs in particular the reed-winged planthopper. Hesse is particularly affected by this, as cultivation is dependent on regional production of late potatoes for storage and security of supply due to climatic and soil characteristics. Late potatoes are particularly endangered by the planthopper, which flies out in May-June. The aim of the project is to develop practical measures and easily implementable recommendations for action together with the farms and to integrate these into practice so that it is possible to achieve the desired goals in the sustainable development of land management. Furthermore, the project serves to increase the climate resilience of cultivation and food supply. The potato also makes a significant contribution to biodiversity in agriculture and represents an important crop rotation element. The competitiveness of farms in Hesse and of regional trade is only possible if the production of late storage goods is maintained. Especially the late cultivation is massively threatened by the planthopper, respectively the pathogens transmitted by it.
