Overall objective of the project

The range of methods for combating insect pests is to be expanded. In this way, plant health is to be strengthened and specific infestations are to be eradicated in an environmentally friendly manner, or QPOs are to be significantly contained in the event of an establishment as RNQP (Union-regulated non-quarantine pests) using biological insecticides based on tailocins/eCIS. It is known that tailocins are effective against bacteria and eCIS is effective against insects, but it is not yet known how the two types of phage derivatives can be reliably distinguished. Effector-encoding genes are located “near” eCIS gene clusters. Although this is a sufficient criterion for distinguishing tailocins from eCIS, it is completely unclear how “proximity” should be defined. The aim here is to make this distinction using bioinformatic means so that we can later predict which bacteria are suitable for combating bacteriosis and which are suitable for combating insect pests.
