Overall objective of the project

The aim of the project is to develop optimized cultivation methods based on genomically selected, more nitrogen-efficient winter oilseed rape hybrids in a multi-stage approach, which realize higher and stable oilseed rape yields and lower N-balance surpluses with significantly lower nitrogen supply. The project pursues the hypotheses that both the individual factors i) genotype, ii) fertilizer form and iii) sowing technique, but especially a coordinated combination of the factors mentioned, can influence the reduction of N-balance surpluses at the same or even higher yield. Therefore, the NAWIRA project will identify more nutrient-efficient winter oilseed rape hybrids and investigate the interaction between hybrids, nitrogen fertilization, and optimized stand distribution through even-rate seeding. The analysis of these complex interactions will provide answers to the question of how genomic selection, nitrogen fertilizer application and sowing technology should be coordinated to achieve the best possible use of nitrogen fertilizer and thus improve the sustainability of winter oilseed rape cultivation
