Biodiversity is considered an important indicator of ecosystem resilience. However, current solutions for determining biodiversity rely almost exclusively on manual identification and counting procedures, which often also involve killing the captured individuals. Such biodiversity monitoring is time-consuming and requires distinct taxonomic expertise. Digital methods to assist in population identification hold enormous application potential, but are rarely used. At the same time, advances in computer science and data science have led to the development of methods that allow autonomous and self-learning taxonomic identification of species using artificial intelligence methods. However, a corresponding application in the field of entomofauna is not yet known, despite its enormous potential for determining agricultural biodiversity. In this project, therefore, a digital solution for monitoring insects based on acoustic signatures will be prototyped.
