Overall objective of the project

The project aims to ensure the outstanding contribution of fungus-resistant grapevine varieties (PIWI varieties) to sustainable and organic viticulture by ensuring the durability of resistance with minimal crop protection. To this end, in EPPR the host-pathogen interaction is studied from the pathogen side to understand its adaptation responses and to develop strategies against overcoming resistance. An important component of such strategies is the accurate prediction of infection of PIWI cultivars with different resistance (Rpv3.1 and Rpv10) by the obligate biotrophic grapevine peronospora (Plasmopara viticola) depending on the infection pressure. This prediction, in turn, allows individually planned fungicide treatments to prevent the spread of resistance-breaking variants of the pathogen and thus contributes significantly to long-term pesticide reduction in viticulture.
