Overall objective of the project

In the research project PROMOTE, genome-based precision breeding strategies are used to increase selection efficiency for developing climate-resilient rye. PROMOTE aims to improve desirable or necessary traits and physiological performance that give rye significant competitive advantages through targeted changes in qualitative traits. PROMOTE aims to i) expand the molecular toolbox for rye by generating reference genome sequences for elite breeding lines from the CARSTEN clade, ii) sustainably manage the genetic diversity of a breeding population by comprehensively characterizing the diversity patterns in the two heterotic clades PETKUS and CARSTEN using high-density SNP genotyping of elite breeding lines, and iii) to evaluate the potential of genomic selection for the valorization of valuable gene variants from plant genetic resources, taking into account the effects of functionally characterized QTL, dominance and epistasis. PROMOTE will characterize, exploit, and extend the natural genetic diversity of rye and its functionality to meet the challenges of climate change and food security.
