Euphresco 2023-A-458: MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry is gaining a foothold as a powerful tool for the identification of microbial pathogens/organisms in both food, medical and environmental microbial testing. Matrix assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) has emerged in recent years as a powerful tool for microbial identification and diagnosis. The technology is proven to be rapid, accurate and a low cost (per sample) diagnostic tool that can be of great benefit for the identification of fungal plant pathogens. However, there is currently a lack of expert spectral libraries for plant pathogenic fungi. This Euphresco project topic proposes to coordinate the rigorous development of a plant pathogenic fungal genera based spectral library that would ultimately be collated and curated by a small group of international expert laboratories. This would then allow the libraries to be shared among laboratories with compatible instruments and provide a central hub for a validated spectral library to accurately identify plant pathogenic fungi for routine and regulatory purposes.
