Overall objective of the project

Since the beginning of 2023, the PB Institute has had a state-of-the-art triple quadrupole ICP-MS for determining the elemental composition of samples. The primary aim is to establish robust methods for routine analysis across all the Institute's projects. Methods for water, plant and soil samples are being adapted to more complex and demanding matrices such as organic and mineral fertilisers. Methods are also being developed for additional digestion and extraction procedures. In addition to micro- and macronutrients relevant to crop production, heavy metals and rare earths are analysed at trace levels. The repertoire of elements analysed in routine operations is being expanded to include elements that are difficult to quantify due to carry-over effects and interferences, such as boron, mercury and titanium.
