For some years now, great efforts have been made to establish the cultivation of Russian dandelion (Taraxacum koksaghyz) as a source of raw materials for high-quality natural rubber in Germany. The RUBIN3 project aims to a) utilise the extensive knowledge generated to date for practical cultivation and b) cover scientific issues that have not yet been addressed or not fully addressed.Building on our previous work, RUBIN3 will analyse further aspects of the practical cultivation of Russian dandelion as a raw material crop. The focus will be on improving the establishment of the crop, optimising weed management and testing alternative cultivation systems. By establishing several time windows for sowing and harvesting, it should be possible to equalise work peaks in practical cultivation and spread the harvest over several campaigns. Furthermore, efforts are being made to procure and characterise additional potential crossing partners for the creation of interspecific bastards for the purpose of increasing biomass and fitness.
