Overall objective of the project

The majority of water bodies in Germany, especially small water bodies in agricultural landscapes (hereinafter referred to as agricultural waters (AG)), do not achieve good ecological status in accordance with the Surface Waters Ordinance. In addition to nutrient and pesticide pollution of water bodies, a key reason for this could be the input of veterinary medicines (TAM) from animal production. It is known that TAMs can be introduced into different environmental compartments, e.g. through the spreading of liquid manure, depending on the active substance. In order to improve the state of knowledge on the contamination situation of AG with TAMs, a comparative status survey is proposed in various types of agricultural areas in Germany influenced by animal production. However, it is not the aim of the project to merely identify contamination of AG with TAMs from treated livestock in regions with high livestock densities. Potential environmental risks can also be transferred to other forms of agricultural use through the transfer of farm manure to other farms and types of operation. The main aim of the project is therefore to allocate the pollution situation of AG with TAM for the first time on a representative basis to a priority agricultural form of use at landscape level in order to identify priority agricultural types for the occurrence of environmental risks. The results obtained should help to develop targeted measures to reduce environmental risks from TAM inputs from animal production.
