Sweet pea and fodder pea (Pisum sativum L.) are recognized as important protein-rich crops with growing global demand and high acceptance, particularly in Europe. However, classical breeding approaches remain labor-intensive and time-consuming. Establishing an efficient doubled haploid (DH) production system through isolated microspore culture would offer a significant shortcut for the rapid development of homozygous lines, thereby accelerating breeding progress. This project aims to establish a doubled haploid (DH) induction protocol via microspore culture by testing several elite breeding materials of sweet and fodder peas. A multifactorial experiment will be conducted to assess the effects of genotype, pre-treatment conditions, callus induction media, and regeneration protocols on DH induction efficiency. Once established, the optimized protocol will be applied to generate DH lines from segregating populations such as F1 hybrids. The successful implementation of this protocol could enhance breeding efficiency and shorten variety development cycles. This would contribute to improving the sustainability and competitiveness of pea cultivation in Germany and the EU, supporting both protein self-sufficiency and the demand for plant-based nutritional sources in human and animal diets.
