The creation and updating of Red Lists—which serve as inventories of animal, plant, and fungal species that are extinct, missing, or endangered in Lower Saxony—is one of the statutory responsibilities of the Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal Protection, and Nature Conservation (NLWKN) as the competent authority for nature conservation. The currently valid Red List of endangered wild bees in Lower Saxony and Bremen, including a complete species list, dates from 2002 (Theunert 2002). For this reason, an update of the complete species list (checklist) and the Red List of wild bees is to be carried out for Lower Saxony and Bremen. To update the comprehensive species list (checklist) and the Red List of wild bees in Lower Saxony and Bremen, a research and development agreement will be concluded between the NLWKN and the Julius Kühn Institute. External wild bee experts from Lower Saxony will be involved through the awarding of subcontracts. The data collection of records and occurrence data for wild bees in Lower Saxony and Bremen, compiled and validated by the JKI, will serve as the basis for updating the comprehensive species list and conducting a threat analysis according to BfN methodology (Ludwig et al. 2009). This collection contains validated wild bee data from the Lower Saxony Animal Species Recording Program (TAEP) of the NLWKN, from relevant professional associations, research institutions, protected areas, individual collectors, and (online) databases. The threat classification of the species is carried out in accordance with the BfN’s classification scheme (Ludwig, et al. 2009, BfN 2021). The classification process is to be carried out both for the entirety of Lower Saxony and Bremen (NB) and at the regional level for the Red List regions of Lowlands (T) and Hills and Mountains (H). The final manuscript will be edited by the NLWKN Information Service prior to publication and released in both digital and printed formats through this service.
