Celebrating 200 Years of Julius Kühn

On 23 October 2025, the JKI together with Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) celebrated the 200th anniversary of Professor Julius Kühn’s birth. A commemorative event held at the JKI headquarters in Quedlinburg paid tribute to one of the most influential figures in agricultural science, whose ideas continue to shape plant research today.

Honouring a visionary researcher

Julius Kühn is regarded as a pioneer of modern agricultural science. He viewed agriculture as an applied natural science, combining biological, chemical, and economic principles to solve real-world problems. His insistence on evidence-based and practice-oriented research remains highly relevant today, especially in light of the challenges posed by climate change, biodiversity loss, and the need for global food security.

The Julius Kühn Institute continues this interdisciplinary tradition, linking basic and applied research with scientific policy advice to develop sustainable solutions for the agriculture of tomorrow.

Guests from science, politics, and practice

Following a welcome address by Prof. Dr Frank Ordon, President of the JKI, a series of greetings and contributions highlighted Julius Kühn’s enduring influence on agricultural research and education, with speakers Cornelia Berns, Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Regional Identity (BMLEH), Dr Franziska Kersten, Member of the German Bundestag, Carl-Albrecht Bartmer, former President of the German Agricultural Society (DLG) and descendant of Julius Kühn and Dr Renate Schafberg from the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Museum of Domestic Animal Research “Julius Kühn.”

Scientific presentations by Prof. Dr Klaus Pillen (MLU), Dr Bernd Hackauf (JKI), and Prof. Dr Johannes Hallmann (JKI) showcased how Kühn’s principles continue to inspire current research, from cereal breeding and genetic improvement to sustainable pest and disease management.

Opening of the permanent exhibition “Julius Kühn and the JKI”

A highlight of the celebration was the opening of the new permanent exhibition “Julius Kühn and the JKI”, which can now be visited in the foyer of the institute’s headquarters in Quedlinburg. Developed in cooperation with local partners, the exhibition presents Julius Kühn’s life and scientific achievements, the evolution of the Julius Kühn Institute, and the continued relevance of his work for modern plant science.

Under the guiding motto “The highest scientific aim is the practical aim… Our task is usefulness,” the exhibition illustrates how Kühn’s approach to combine science with practical application remains at the heart of agricultural research today. It reminds us that true scientific progress depends on interdisciplinary thinking and long-term vision.

A day of dialogue and inspiration

The anniversary celebration offered guests an opportunity for lively exchange and reflection in an open and collegial atmosphere.
With its combination of historical perspective and forward-looking discussion, the event paid a fitting tribute to Julius Kühn’s lasting contribution to agricultural science.

The Julius Kühn Institute thanks all speakers, partners, and guests who helped make this special occasion both memorable and inspiring.
