Institute for Strategies and Technology Assessment

The Institute

The Institute for Strategies and Technology Assessment develops, tests and evaluates concepts and strategies for sustainable crop production. We take into account current developments, as well as possible future scenarios and assess the consequences for agriculture, the environment and also for society.

Efficient use of resources, safeguarding food production, climate change and climate adaptation of agriculture as well as conservation and promotion of biodiversity are current research foci of our institute. Strategies of integrated and organic agriculture play the decisive role. Since no strategy, no matter how good, will work without practical feasibility on farms, it is important to us to also include the benefits and costs of crop production concepts and strategies in our investigations. A special focus of our research is on issues related to crop protection.

The range of research methods at our institute is broad. It ranges from climate chamber and field experiments to the use of geographic information systems (GIS) and model-based analyses of environmental risks, pest forecasts or future yield developments.

In addition to research, the tasks of our institute also include the provision of expert advice to politicians/the BMEL. Furthermore, our institute performs overarching tasks within the JKI for the coordination, networking and bundling of special topics, in particular via the Climate Unit, the Networking Unit for Organic Agriculture, the Networking Unit for the National Action Plan for the Sustainable Use of Plant Protection Products (NAP) and the Networking Unit for Gap Indications.

The close cooperation with all JKI institutes enables us to combine individual results into holistic strategies and impact assessments on an interdisciplinary basis.
