We all know pests of plants. But how can we find out if new plant pests occur and how can we identify them? The Institute Plant Health coordinates systematic surveys in all Federal States (monitorings) to detect the occurrence of a plant pest in Germany or how widespread it is. As a reference laboratory we are tightly connected with laboratories in Germany and abroad. We support the Plant Protection Services of the Federal States in the detection and identification of plant pests.
Mainly for newly introduced plant pests in Germany, basic data on their occurrence are missing. The JKI coordinates these systematic surveys as follows:
The monitoring data are the basis for risk analyses and targeted precaution measures in Germany and the EU.
Our Institute has already performed reference laboratory functions for a long time. The main objective is to guarantee the quality and security in the diagnostics of new plant pests and quarantine pests. This serves for the comparability, acceptance and reliability of test results of different laboratories.
