Municipalities are obliged to control weeds on pavements. Since the use of chemical plant protection products is generally banned on pavements, thermal treatments are often used. The institute inspects and optimizes the equipment used for thermal weed control regarding its effectiveness and efficiency.
So far there is scarcely information about productivity and limitation of use of thermal operating equipment. Therefore the institute developed a method of measurement and a test facility. For the first time, systematic and repeatable technical measurements on thermal operating equipment can be conducted. Within the test facility several sensors can determine temperature distribution and temperature profiles.
To achieve good thermal effectiveness and low costs of fuel, the temperature must be constantly high. In the test facility, measurements with plants can take place under defined conditions. Hence the biological effectiveness of the thermal process can be rated.
The test facility is suited for all kinds of thermal operating equipment like flame treatment, heated air, infrared, hot water and hot foam.
