Evaluation of resistance

Identifying and using genetically determined resistance: We investigate different host-pathogen systems. This knowledge contributes to the development of durable resistant host plants and their utilization in practical cultivar breeding.

The utilization of cultivars resistant to biotic and abiotic stress factors and adapted to environmental conditions contributes to diminishing yield and quality losses in fruit production. An important requirement for the development of resistant cultivars is the variability of the trait “resistance” within the species and its heritability. The evaluation of fruit genetic resources and the selection of resistant donors is the first step towards the development of a resistant cultivar. The development and application of methods to assess plant resistance relies on phenotypic evaluation of plants. Phenotypic data are the basis for gene and allele detection triggering resistant phenotypes. The use of resistance genes in breeding programs for developing resistant cultivars is an efficient tool to control pathogens, prevents damages in host plants, and reduces the application of plant protection agents and therefore protects our environment.

Our research aims are:

  • evaluation of fruit genetic resources of pome, stone and soft fruit for resistance to major pathogens and pathogens becoming relevant due to changing climatic conditions
  • development of screening  techniques to assess resistance in plants in the field and greenhouse with the aim of identifying pre-breeding material
  • studies on host-pathogen interactions and their genetic basis
  • characterization of plant defense mechanisms against pathogen infestation
