Fruit genetic resources

Conserving and using fruit biodiversity: We manage a genebank for fruit crop species that includes thousands of genetically different accessions of domestic cultivars and related wild species. These collections provide a unique resource for basic genetic research and fruit breeding.

Ever since a research institute was established in Dresden-Pillnitz, fruit genetic resources have been collected in Germany and abroad and transferred to this location. Our ex situ field collection contains 3,000 accessions of different botanical species grown on an approximately 10 ha area. Our collections include:

  • apple
  • pear
  • sweet cherry and sour cherry
  • plum
  • strawberry
  • raspberry and blackberry
  • wildfruit species, like rowan, hawthorn etc.

Our core collections hold plants representing a diversity of genes and gene combinations for traits. To use this genetic resource, we rely on a comprehensive evaluation of phenotypic and genotypic characters. We focus on:

  • Characterization data for traits that are highly heritable and can be easily evaluated like tree vigor, flowering time, etc.
  • Evaluation data of complex traits like yield, resistance to pathogens and diseases, growing characters etc., -   traits that are crucial for the  use of these plants

We have developed a comprehensive database for phenotypic and genotypic data that provides access to information about genetic resources for all users. We are the Coordinator of the Deutsche Genbank Obst (in English: German National Fruit Genebank), a decentralized network for sustainable and cost efficient conservation of fruit genetic resources in Germany.  The genebank is in German language.

As regards the supply of material for research, breeding and education purposes,  all necessary information and application forms are provided under "Material transfer".
