JKI a first time exhibitor at the International Travel Trade Show (ITB) 2020

Start: 04 March 2020 | 10 a.m.

End: 08 March 2020 | 6 p.m.

Travelers sometimes unintentionally introduce invasive species or quarantine pests into new environments. Since the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 2020 as the International Year of Plant Health (IYPH), the JKI uses for the first time the International Travel Trade Show "ITB Berlin" as a platform to raise awareness amongst the stakeholders in the travel business and private travelers as well. Overall the year 2020 is expected to increase the global awareness among the public and policy makers for plant health issues, invasive species and quarantine pests. The UN General Assembly invited FAO, with the IPPC Secretariat, to serve as the lead agency to spearhead activities, and called on governments, civil society, and the private sector to engage at global, regional and national levels.

Hence, in Hall 24 at the booth of the German Ministry for Agriculture, JKI's Institute for National and International Plant Health introduces quarantine pests and organisms which are likely to be spread via tourists. Amongst them are a fruit fly, a tiny worm (called nematode) or the dangerous xyllella bacterium, which has already killed olive-tree plantations in Italy. The JKI being the Federal Research Institute for Cultivated Plants investigates the dangers posed by such non-native species to our ecosystems. It reveals the pathways of their introduction, calculates spread scenarios, assesses risks and elaborates measures to prevent the entry and spread of invasive species. In its capacity as competent federal authority, the JKI fulfils numerous official task.
