Safety evaluation and risk assessment

Biotechnological methods or new breeding technologies can be used to introduce new characteristics to animals, plants or microorganisms. Whenever such animals, plants or microorganisms are intended to be released into the environment, e.g., potatoes with a modified gene for an increase of the starch content to be grown in the field, a safety and sustainability assessment by experts comes first. Possible effects on the future habitat must be assessed, and management measures must be developed and evaluated. These are the responsibilities of the scientists working in this field of research.
