    Aim: Offering of online database containing information on alternatives for applying plant protection products for free. Characterization: With the database ALPS-JKI, the Federal Research Centre for Cultivated Plants contributes to promoting integrated pest management and to the necessary extent of applying plant protection products in crop farms for free. This database offers a comfortable way of searching for combinations of crops and pests, possible specific measures, and for key words. Running free text search is also possible. The free text search, in particular, has a great potential for random queries. Web front end and layout allow intuitive navigation. Scientists have permanently improved and updated the database. The ALPS-JKI data base contains nearly 16,000 data sets (a data set = a combination of crop + plant pest + plant protection measure) and informes you about 705 plants, 2427 plant pests (=insects, fungi, bacteria, viruses, nematodes, mammals, weeds) and 126 plant protection measures. All this information is based on 2925 publications. The editorial deadline was the 15th June 2015.

  Development of a rapid, sensitive and specific assay for grapevine trunk diseases in viticulture

  • Overall objective of the project:
    The project refers to the following topics as included in the working tableau: "Etiology and epidemiology of Esca disease of grapevine", and "Diagnosis of pathogens". Early diagnosis of Esca and Eutypiosis is fundamental for a possible control of these diseases. Here, we plan trials both in the greenhoause and in the field and these are based on a completely new approach: i) distribution of nutritional elements shall be examined both in infected and non-infected leaves, in berries of different developmental stages, and in the xylem sap; ii) the physical presence of pathogens shall be examined in the xylem sap using molecular disgnosis and culturing trials and shall be used as a basis for possible quantification. Target organisms include Phaeomoniella chlamydospora (Pch), Phaeoacremonium aleophilum (Pal) and Eutypa lata (Elata). An assay allowing early diagnosis could be used as follows: i) non-destructive assessment of actual condituion of vines, in this way allowing excat measures for possible limitation of diseases; ii) non-destructive assessment of possible control measures (for instance, based on fungicides or defined management in the field). None of these possibilities is available at the moment and is highly desired in all viticultural regions worldwide.

  Residue analytical investigations of bees and bee-related materials in the framework of cooperation with research institutions

  • Overall objective of the project:
    

    Within the scope of these cooperations (universities, other research institutes), the focus lies on the determination of individual active ingredients as well as the multi-component screening for the investigation center for bee poisoning (current status: about 290 substances) in bees and bee-relevant matrices (plants, pollen, nectar, wax, honey, bee larvae). Samples are taken from laboratory and (semi-)field experiments within the scope of defined research questions. The questions include the determination of residues in honey and wild bees and the samples come, for example, from experiments carried out at selected sites with varying degrees of agricultural use. The main objective is to determine residue loads in matrices mentioned earlier, and, if necessary to make recommendations to reduce them.

  Development of the GIS-based risk indicator SYNOPS-GIS for identification and analysis of areas with increased environmental risk related to the use of chemical plant protection products (hot-spot analysis)

  • Overall objective of the project:
    The indicator model SYNOPS-GIS assesses aquatic and terrestrial risk at the field level, which then can be aggregated at variable spatial levels. SYNOPS calculates the loads and concentrations for three non-target compartments which are exposed with pesticides by different pathways. For the soil direct loads regarding interception, for the field margins drift and for the surface water drift, run-off erosion and drainage are considered as exposure pathways. The spatial input data required for the risk assessment are derived and continuously updated from existing data sets as ATKIS, land parcel information system (LIPS), digital soil maps, European soil map, weather and climate data from the German Weather Service (DWD). Furthermore, records that describe the use of pesticides are linked to the BVL product database and an active ingredient database which are updated regularly. This application- specific data is linked with the spatial environmental parameters and the risk potential is analyzed on spatial level. Based on the three surveys on pesticide use conducted within the Institute SF (demonstration farms, reference farms and the PAPA-survey) the spatial risk will be analyzed and compared. In addition a module to assess the risk for beneficial organisms by PPP's is developed in collaboration with the Institute ÖPV. Furthermore, an Internet based SYNOPS application is developed to facilitate the risk analysis of individual PSM strategies under realistic environmental conditions ( SYNOPS WEB).

  • Overall objective of the project:
    Intensive agriculture is considered as a major cause of the decline of insect diversity and biomass in Germany. Within the frame of the national action programme for the conservation of insects, FInAL will therefore establish Landscape Laboratories in representative agricultural landscapes of Germany where we will develop, demonstrate and evaluate innovative measures for facilitating insects through integrated cultivation of renewable resources in a landscape context.

  • Overall objective of the project:
    Small freshwater systems in agricultural landscapes are vulnerable to inputs of plant protection products and fertilizers. Therefore, the fauna in these water bodies can be severely impaired. This is crucial, since small freshwaters host the largest biodiversity compared to other freshwater systems such as lakes and rivers. Due to the reasons above, small freshwaters at the same time host the largest fraction of endangered species on the landscape scale. So far, there is no biological monitoring of small freshwaters. Its conceptual development is complex due to the high number and the large diversity of these ecosystems (e.g. in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania there are about 60.000 small freshwaters in or adjacent to agricultural fields). The JKI currently investigates the effects of agricultural management strategies on the biodiversity of these freshwaters. In MonViA, the JKI will, in close collaboration with the plant protection services of the federal states of Germany, develop a monitoring concept for biodiversity in small freshwaters. Test-projects based on this concept will provide a first overview on the current situation, followed by continuous status descriptions of the biodiversity in small freshwaters in agricultural landscapes.

    In MonViA, the Julius Kühn-Institute develops in close co-operation with the Thünen-Institute and the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food a broad-based farmland biodiversity monitoring for Germany. The joint project consists of three main parts: a) a general, national wide trend monitoring based on a systematic sampling grid, b) an in-depth, question-based monitoring on specific issues focusing on insects and c) a Citizen-Science monitoring, based on the participation of farmers, associations and interested citizens. The as long-term designed project involves 6 specialist institutes from the TI, 8 from the JKI and the BLE with a total of more than 35 persons. In the sub-project "Monitoring the diversity of habitats - small landscape structures and landscape elements" methods are developed and made available to derive indicators of habitat quality (e.g. age, volume; connectivity) derived from remote sensing data (e.g. LiDAR, VHR).

  • Overall objective of the project:
    Coordinated trials on focus topics are carried out at different locations of the participating institutions. Currently it is tested if the addition of sugar in low concentration to different PPP's may increase efficacy against Frankliniella occidentalis. To exclude the possibility of side effects against pollinators, additional trials with bees and bumblebees were carried out. Furthermore trials on application technique are carried out in order to improve nozzle choice in ornamental production.
