Overall objective of the project:
Members of the genus Monilinia spec. cause fruit rot and peak
drought in fruit growing, especially in stone fruit. Extensive chemical
plant protection measures are carried out to protect both the plants and
the harvest from infestation. Up to now, the interaction of the fungus
with the host plant has hardly been investigated and the causes of the
variety-specific resistances have not yet been identified. The biology
of the pathogen as well as the interaction with the host plant will be
investigated with the aim to optimize control and understanding the
genetic causes of resistance in order to use this information for the
breeding of Monilinia-resistant varieties.

Overall objective of the project:
Apple cultivars and breeding lines with resistance against fire blight (Erwinia amylovora) will be selected after shoot inoculation. Investigations of the inheritance of the resistance will be realised. The aim of the project is the use of plant resistance against pathogens that can not be controlled chemically.

Overall objective of the project:
Apple trees with low susceptibility to Neonectria ditissima will be selected in the field. The objective is the establishment of strategies for using durable resistance.
