  • Overall objective of the project:
    Due to its non-invasive character and the variability of sample application, vibrational spectroscopy offers a fast and reliable tool for the identification of plant constituents by characteristic absorptions even in complex samples. This makes it possible to predict the content and distribution of specific substances in the sample. In addition, extensive sample preparation, which is necessary for conventional analyses (HPLC, GC), can often be avoided. Quantification models for the determination of active substances or the composition of plant material for the assessment of food quality, production processes and breeding success should be created using spectroscopic methods. Current projects represent the further development of spectroscopic calibration models and their application for the quantitative determination of the plant valuable substances of caraway (ZG-4149), black caraway and carrots.

    The year-round keeping of the compost worm Eisenia andrei in the laboratory is necessary for experimental work on the effects of plant protection products and heavy metals on soil macroorganisms. The keeping of E. andrei is scientifically monitored to ensure the identity, health and robustness of that organism.

  • Overall objective of the project:
    In the European registration and national authorization procedure of plant protection products ((inter)zonal evaluation and the mutual recognition) and active substances the efficacy against the storage pests and the impact on the quality of infested and treated plant products as well as the resistance risk are evaluated. The Draft Registration Report and a National Addendum have to be created, both based on the EU Regulation 1107/2009/EC and the Regulations 284/2013/EU and 546/2011/EU, EU Guidance Documents and EPPO Standards. The intended and proper uses has to be assessed and amended if necessary (modification and risk mitigation measures). In this context, the basic standards for the safe and effective use of plant protection products are the GEP and GAP which have to be considered. Furthermore, the comparative assessment and substitution of plant protection products has to be performed on the level of use; candidates for substitution contain active substances with certain undesirable hazardous properties. Besides these tasks the borderlines between plant protection products and biocides and plant products and food/feed are considered in the context of the storage of goods.

  • Overall objective of the project:
    For the implementation of one of the objectives of the National action plan on the sustainable use of plant protection products (ppp), the load of ppp in selected exposed small water bodies in the agricultural landscape shall be investigated and ecotoxicologically evaluated. Possible deviations from the pursued "good chemical condition" of the water bodies shall be interpreted on the basis of the management data and a GIS-based assessment of the exposition. If acceptable concentrations are exceeded or mixtures of ppp occur, investigations on the ecological condition are appropriate. The aim of the project is to develop and test options for action to minimize entries in the long term. The results enter into a model that displays these complex relationships and supports decision-making of farmers or advisory services.

  Action Plan for improving the situation in stored product protection

  • Overall objective of the project:
    Among the topics stated in the National Action Plan for the sustainable use of plant protection products is the demand for sufficient methods of plant protection also in stored product protection. In cooperation with relevant associations along the agricultural and food processing value chain an action plan for stored product protection is produced that describes problems and measures. In cases where in future additional plant protection products are not to be expected one could use preventive and non-chemical methods to close gaps or prevent the development of resistance.

  Innovative stored products

  • Overall objective of the project:
    Against the background of the International Year of Pulses 2016 this project aims to investigate whether innovative stored products such as soy are susceptible to infestation by stored-product pests. This pilot project will be continued and the follow-up study deals with differences in the attractiveness of further plant products such as narrow-leafed lupine (high alkaloid content) and sweet lupine (low alkaloid content) to possible pest insects, and also, the susceptibility of simply processed oil seed rape (grist, flour). In view of the intensified cultivation and storage of novel commodities, additionally the emergence of a new, economically important pest spectrum as well as the risk of the introduction of new pest species need to be clarified.

  The host finding behavior of the larval parasitoid Holepyris sylvanidis and its implementation into integrated pest management as biological control agent of stored product pest beetle

    The polyphagous ectoparasitoid Holepyris sylvanidis is a promising candidate for biological control of stored product pest beetles. It preferably attacks larvae of Tribolium spp. (T. castaneum, T. confusum and T. destructor) and could be used in stored product protection as alternative to classical chemical control measurements. So far, H. sylvanidis is not commercially available and knowledge regarding its host finding behavior is still scarce. The project thus aims to investigate the following questions: 1) What are the principles of host finding/acceptance in H. sylvanidis and what influence does the host habitat have on the parasitoids' behavior? 2) Is it possible to increase the parasitization rate in the F1 generation by conditioning of the parental generation with specific (host) odors? 3) Does the intentional release of laboratory reared H. sylvanidis in mills and bakeries lead to an efficient control of pest populations? We will furthermore investigate the VOCs involved in host finding of H. sylvanidis and use these data for the development of lure-based traps which will a) allow the monitoring of H. sylvanidis-populations under storage conditions, b) enhance the attraction to possible infection sites and b) help to optimize the rearing of parasitoids/antagonists.
